The IEAW was formed in 2001, to provide a select number of women in Afghanistan an education in the US. The IEAW is the only program providing undergraduate scholarships to Afghan women. The unique aspect of the programs offered by the IEAW is the intention that the women who participate, return to Afghanistan each summer to help with the reconstruction of their homeland and then again after the completion of their education. The four year program, in addition to scholarships, supports and encourages the young women to share and maintain their cultural and religious values while in the US. Their educational experience in the US provides the exposure to another culture where women are free and respected, and a better understanding of their own religion, thus empowering them to return home and be agents for change in their country.
Since this organization was formed, 33 women have graduated from US universities and another 33 are currently enrolled.
