Independent Diplomat (ID) works to amplify the voices of the most marginalized and vulnerable in the corridors of power. Through disruptive diplomacy, ID empowers the least-resourced diplomatic actors to pry open the closed doors of international negotiations and advocate their interests. When those with the most at stake are not included during international discussions that will determine their futures, the result is predictable—agreements reached without the input of all relevant parties are less sustainable and all too often lead to the resumption of armed conflict.
By helping to level the diplomatic playing field, ID contributes to negotiated outcomes that are more just, equitable and sustainable.
For example, ID works with the Republic of the Marshall Islands on its efforts to drive a more ambitious outcome in international climate change negotiations. ID has helped the Marshall Islands, where climate change has already arrived, to build momentum towards a new climate treaty.
ID believes that everyone, not just the powerful, should have a seat at the table when their future is being discussed.
