***UPDATE*** KONA MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !!! Stay Tuned...
Aloha Kākou! Hawaii is the only state in the US that does not have a memorial to honor those in Law Enforcement who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their community. As a result, in 2010 the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation was formed. Its primary purpose is to design, construct, and maintain a monument to honor law enforcement officers from city, county, state, military, and federal agencies who have died in the line of duty, while serving the people of Hawaii. Construction was set to begin when the Federal government pledged to provide the final 300K needed to build the memorial, unfortunately, due to the government shut-down that occurred later that year and sequestration, that money was cut from the budget. I have vowed to help the Foundation raise the money lost and finally build a memorial.
This race season, to pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our community, and to raise awareness to the cause, I have participated in triathlon races across the state wearing BDU's, a ballistic vest and helmet. Thus far, I have completed five races; a sprint, three olympic and a half-ironman. With each passing race, people have rallyed behind this cause with support and donations. Despite the ground swell of support I am still short of completing my mission of raising at least 10K for the Memorial Foundation and the hope to raise enough awareness to attract corporate donations to raise the remaining funds so that we can honor the 63 Officers that paid the ultimate sacrifice.
My motto: "Here to complete, not to compete" refers to my mission of utilizing the sport that we love not as a test of endurance, but as a sounding board to send a message that Hawaii's Law Enforcement community needs your help to complete a very important and over due project.
Thanks to an outpouring of suppor from the community and its leaders, on 09/17/2014 I received a slot in the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Fortunately, I kept training on faith that this would all fall into place and I will be ready to compete, in full Kit, nearly 40 pounds, until my mission is complete, for the families of the fallen.
