The Story

Update: Our third family has arrived and just in time! They are beginning to integrate into the community, the kids are starting school and the adults are beginning english education classes.

Our second family is starting to acclimate to New Haven (even with the cold weather). Their older kids have started school, and the parents are attending adult education classes and looking for jobs. We need assistance with the job search for two of the families. Please contact if you can assist, especially during daytime hours.

Our first refugee family, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, is moving to another state to reconnect with family and friends.  Your support was instrumental their first year in New Haven and as they move onward.

The Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR) is a collaboration between local synagogues to co-sponsor refugee families who are new to the New Haven area. The synagogues have a history of individually sponsoring refugee families, dating back to the 1980s, and felt a need to reinvigorate those efforts in light of the recent refugee crises worldwide. While the synagogues span different denominations of Judaism, all recognize that one of the Torah’s strongest themes is the obligation to love the stranger. Please join us in supporting those values by helping refugee families integrate into the broader New Haven community.

Our original goal was to raise 18,000 dollars, for this year, which would allow us to sponsor up to 3 families.  We have increased that goal to 24,000 to be ready to sponsor a 4th family if IRIS needs more assistance from co-sponsors. Funds will go toward payment of a security deposit for apartment rental, subsidizing the family’s rent and basic utility costs for the first few months.  Other expenses will include new mattresses and box springs for each family member, a cell phone, and some household items we may not get through donations.
