Get to know the amazing Zaituna:
Zaituna and her two brothers were raised by their grandmother in the Kambi Garba District of Kenya. Her father lives far away from them and sends money when he can. Zaituna sees her father once a year. She sees her mother a little more frequently, but because her mother spends her time looking for food, Zaituna learned to rely on her grandmother and her brothers for support. “I remember quarreling with my mother every single day that I would see her,” Zaituna said.
“But she is still very close to my heart.”
Today at Daraja Academy:
“If I were not at Daraja, I would have been married since in our culture, if a girl reaches the age of fourteen, she is ready and matured for marriage,” Zaituna said. Focused on making the most out of her opportunity to attend Daraja, Zaituna plans on attending a university after graduating from high school. “I want to be a surgeon to give people second chances in life,” she said. “With an education, I can give myself the ability to change people’s lives.”
