The First Cause Ride is a PTSD and Occupational Stress Injuries cycling ride/fundraiser aimed at uniting civilians and BC's First Responder agencies working together to raise funds to start an online early recognition, support and treatment program that is tailor made for First Responders and their families. Our mission: To activate 150 cyclists to fundraise $100,000 and ride on August 20, 2016. ALL riders welcome! We want to see general public riding together with First Responders of all ages and cycling abilities.
Our First Responders are in desperate need of our help. Police, Fire, Paramedics, Nurses, Sheriffs, Border Services, and other front line medical and peace officers who keep us safe and fight for our lives on a daily basis are suffering. Through repeated exposure to traumatic events, our First Responders are being affected by PTSD and occupational stress injuries at a staggering rate, to the extent that we have lost more than a few First Responders to a tragic and untimely death. In fact 86.9% of First Responders have post-traumatic stress reactions to events witnesses at work, and they are twice as likely to develop PTSD as a result. How can First Responders do their best to protect your family if they are struggling with mental health challenges?
This is not acceptable, so to combat this growing threat we have created a community driven cycling fundraiser. Led by the Vancouver Firefighter Charities and the Surrey Firefighters’ Charitable Society, we are a multi agency group comprised of both First Responders and civilians. In support are many Police, Law Enforcement, Firefighter, Nurses' Unions and Personnel throughout BC.
We are asking each rider to raise a minimum of $500 in online fundraising to be able to participate in the ride. We will have tons of creative assets and provide you with personal assistance to ensure that you are successful in your fundraising. The whole process is seamless, as part of your registration you will be able to set up your fundraising page where you can build it out and begin crushing your goal!
100% of donations are tax deductible, and proceeds will support the development of an early recognition and treatment program that is tailor made and widely available to all First Responders in BC and their Families.
Where do donations go, and why?
In concert with Vancouver Coastal Health and Kelty Online Services, we are working with professionals at VGH to create an early recognition and treatment program that is tailor-made and widely available online to all BC First Responders and their families. funds raised will go towards creating an early recognition and treatment program that is tailor made and widely available to all First Responders in BC and their Families.
Online-yet personal, the service will be available to promote early diagnosis, leading to treatment of occupational stress injuries, including PTSD. With an internet connection, any BC First Responder will be able to receive help, no matter where in BC they live.
We will have a number of training tools and a social community group as well as regular training rides with other crews from various departments, halls and organizations as well as some of the best cyclists in the lower mainland.
The First Cause Ride will start at Jack Poole Plaza in downtown Vancouver, travelling through the communities of Burnaby, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Mission, Abbotsford, Langley and finishing at the Central City Shopping Centre’s Plaza in Surrey.
This is a non-competitive/no drop and fully supported group ride. Cyclists of many abilities are encouraged to participate. Rules of the road shall be followed. One unique aspect of this ride is that each group or “Peloton” will be led out by an emergency vehicle and escorted by a support car in the rear, so you will have onsite support every step of the way and an official escort as well!
