BENEFITING: Great March for Climate Action
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2014
The Great March for Climate Action is almost done! We’ve walked from Los Angeles to this point, 2,890 miles into our journey. The end goal is Washington, DC on November 1st. We've walked through and witnessed climate change and the disaster of continued fossil fuel addiction in the following communities: The Port of Los Angeles and Wilmington, CA: Environmental rascism abounds here as this community has the worst air quality in the Los Angeles basin due to 7,400 acres of oil refineries.
Southern California & the Mojave Desert: The American southwest is in the grip of a mega-drought with forest fires and water rationing in some parts; yet the fracking industry feels entitled to dump frack waste water right into the Central Valley.
Phoenix, AZ: The worst rate of recidivism in the nation sees the privatized prison industry maximizing profit while communities therein suffer from lack of nutrition and choices are limited; beer is cheaper than water. Meanwhile, Phoenix uses water like it was going out of style, for lawns and golf courses, instead of gardens to feed people.
Payson, AZ: Finally, a community getting its act together in the Transition Town Movement. Check it out!
Skip forward- Nebraska: The proposed Keystone XL pipeline route through Nebraska is a climate lynch pin. If this project goes through it will lock in the continued development of the Alberta tar-sands and it will lock in certain climate disaster. The climate march is joining forces with ranchers, first nation people (in Canada and the US), environmental justice organizations, and more to oppose and stop this boondoggle.
So much more story to tell guys. Wait till I get home!
I need the help of my friends and supporters back home to assure my continued work on the march. I’m at 66% of my fund-raising goal to date and we are at the finish mark. My contribution is my feet are on the ground and I’m talking with people across the country about the urgent need for action on the climate crisis. I also have the role of driving support vehicles and making sure the camp is properly set up and cleaned-up everywhere we go. I’m not paid to do this and have sacrificed income, my apartment, and possesions in order to become part of this historic movement. We’re at a critical moment and this march has got to make it through. We’ve already built a lot of momentum and grass-roots support for changing our political climate. Local organizations have come together and more people are talking past their differences because our march came through their community.
Help me keep this up. A donation of $20- covers a marcher for a day (food, campsite, fuel for hauling gear). A donation of $30- would represent 10 cents a mile for the 3,000 miles we’ll be completing. A donation of $250- covers expenses over a week and can keep tents, bike-trailers, and bicycles repaired.
Why am I doing this?
As a science teacher with a background in ecology, I am keenly aware that things are not right with our earth’s systems right now. Our oceans are souring (carbonic acid from CO2) and heating up. Our atmosphere is heating up with the equivalent energy of 400 atomic bomb explosions every second. It doesn't help that the extreme right and some oil execs and sheiks are attacking the messengers, and scientists are being libeled and threatened. It's nuts.
Seeing your support, even if it’s $5-, would be a huge boost to my morale and keep my stride strong and steady.
