EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
I run for my son Henry! He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago, just before he turned 3 years old, it was exactly one month after his little brother was born. It turned our life upside down! I never actually knew what diabetes was or how it affected someone on a daily basis. If I could sum it up in one word, it SUCKS! It sucks that my 5 year old son has to live with this chronic disease, it sucks that there is no cure, it sucks that we have to draw blood from his fingers 10-12 times a day, it sucks that we have to constantly monitor what he is eating, it sucks that we have to give him synthetic insulin to stay alive, and it sucks to hear him say, "it's not fair that I have diabetes!" He's right, it is not fair!
However, we are hopeful for a better future! We find that hope at the Joslin Diabetes Center where Henry gets treated. The doctors, nurses, nutritionists, and specialists are simply the best! They are patient, kind, and cutting edge. They truly understand our needs and are always available for guidance. The research and clinical trials underway will lead to improving the lives of all diabetics and eventually a cure will be found. We as a family consider the people of Joslin to be an extention of our family and will do anything to help them move forward in their mission to eradicate diabetes! Please help me continue to move the mission of the Joslin Diabetes Center forward and help my son see the day where his diabetes no longer sucks because it no longer exists!
I dedicate my run first and foremost to my best bud- Henry- and also to my nephew, cousin, two uncles and all other diabetics seeking to improve their quality of life every day. 26.2 miles is only 4 hours of pushing through physical and mental barriers. On several occasions we have had hospital stays longer than 4 hours to deal with a sickness that you or I would never consider going to the hospital for, all because of diabetes! This race is the least I can do!
