My brother passed away from complications of Type 1 Diabetes on January 5th, 2013. He was very sick for the 3-4 months leading up to his death and had lost his ability to walk, move his arms and had difficulty speaking. After a brain biopsy showed that he had an incurable virus attacking his brain, he asked me if I could do him a favor. He wanted me to run this year's Boston Marathon for Joslin Diabetes Center as a way of thanking his doctors for fighting so hard to save his life. I thought last year's marathon was my last, but how could I ever say no to my brother at that moment, especially with him staring at me unable to walk or move? I would never say no to him!
Michael had diabetes for thirty years and because of this disease, he went through brain surgery, multiple heart surgeries, several eye surgeries, a kidney transplant and he watched our sister die from diabetes in 1989. Despite these challenges, he always believed the researchers at Joslin would find a cure. Believing this, he fought his illnesses like I have never seen anyone fight! He was and always will be an inspiration to me.
He had amazing support from his doctors at Beth Israel and Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. He was so grateful for the care he received, especially from his favorite doctor, Melanie Hoenig. Every time I think of Dr. Hoenig, and how she genuinely cared for my brother, I tear up because she is exactly the doctor you want taking care of a loved one.
So here I go again....for what I pray is my marathon ever on April 15th!! I know you get a lot of requests for charitable donations, if you can, please join me in honoring Michael’s request and his memory. Your support will help the amazing doctors at Joslin as they fight for Michael's dream of a cure for diabetes.
