THE STORY:

The Boston Marathon is defined by moments. Moments of triumph, and moments of despair. The Boston Marathon is defined by moments that we never forget.

I'll never forget being accepted into my 1st Boston Marathon. I'll never forget standing at the starting line of my 1st Boston Marathon. And I’ll never forget crossing the finish for the first time. These were moments of hope, wonder, and excitement. These were moments of unparalleled possibility. These were moments where barriers, obstacles, and despair simply didn’t exist. These moments were driven by many memories, moments, and milestones leading up to them.

These Boston Marathon were inspired by over 30,000 finger pricks. Inspired by over 1,500 catheter insertions into my stomach. Inspired by over 5,400 sleepless nights - because to get to the Boston Marathon, I have woken up every 3 hours each night since I was diagnosed on September 18, 2001.

There have been countless peaks during the Boston Marathon. But there have been even more lows, in both blood sugar and emotion, as I wrestle with countless cramps, sore legs, and long training runs that simply won’t end.

Running marathons with Type 1 Diabetes? It isn’t easy. It takes more work, more thought, and exponentially more effort to manage my diabetes while running. And honestly? I could be in the same health I am today, without running the Boston Marathon each year. Why, then, do I force myself to keep running? To keep running when every muscle in my body hurts. To keep running when the only thing I want in this world is to stop.

I'm thankful. For every moment I have experienced along the way. For every friend I have made during those treacherous training runs. And I'm thankful for every spectator along the course who looks me square in the eye and thanks me for running for Joslin. I'm thankful for my doctors and my nurses, who have made the impossible possible with their guidance and advice. And I'm thankful to you - the people around me. Because without your support, the impossible would still be impossible.

The 2017 Boston Marathon will mark my 4th Boston Marathon. With your support, my family will surpass $200,000 raised for diabetes research through the Boston Marathon.

We're defined by moments during the Boston Marathon. The support you provide will create significant moments for diabetes research and clinical care. Moments that simply wouldn’t be possible if we weren’t running towards Boylston Street together. These are the moments that drive me to keep running.

What will your moment be?
