THE STORY:

THE STORY

Last week Tropical Cyclone Pam battered past the island nation of Kiribati before building up steam and hitting Vanuatu head on. Naturally the media focused on the destruction in Vanuatu, but a number of outlying affected countries have been ignored. Kiribati is one of those nations.

THE MATERNITY WARD

Currently the main causeway, communications, airport, and hospital are down. We're focusing on one small meaningful project - the Betio Maternity Ward. Because of Cyclone Pam, Betio hospital and maternity ward is currently inoperable. If Kiribati suffers any post disaster outbreak, this could become catastrophic.

The facility is a 23-bed hospital serving about 20,000 people in a very densely populated area of the main island. It is primarily an old colonial structure that has been over capacity for years.

The beds are always occupied and very often there is only space for patients on floors. Before the storm it housed a 16-bed main ward, an 8-bed observation ward, and a maternity ward allowing for 16-20 deliveries/month.

No one has contacted the hospital to help or offered support. We are the only ones responding. Let's prevent a disaster after a disaster.

THE PLAN

To do so, we need to raise $25,000 to fully assess the structural damage, rebuild the Betio Maternity Ward, and open it to the community.

We've partnered with four independent relief and reconstruction groups to put this build into action. Together with Real Medicine Foundation, Small Works, Team Rubicon, and Young Pioneer Disaster Response, we've assembled a response team to help reopen the hospital. If successful, we'll work with the Government of Kiribati on longterm sustainable reconstruction. Now it's up to you to help us raise the money.
