As a Licensed Massage Therapist, it is an extreme honor and privilege to be able to utilize my chosen profession to create an impact on global youth. It will be my second time traveling with Liddle Kidz Foundation to do so. Our last trip in 2012 to Vietnam proved to be an experience of a lifetime. Our team was able to create a sustainable impact by not only providing pediatric massage and nurturing touch to underserved children, but buy also training their caregivers the techniques to carry on this essential work. Our team’s journey was documented in a video that gives you an inside look at how many lives we touched. The video is highlighted in the box to the left, as well as pictures of me working with children and caregivers in these orphanages and institutional settings. Liddle Kidz Foundation’s Global Outreach Philippines 2016
Alongside a team of 29 other dedicated professionals, we will travel to three major cities in the Philippines for three weeks in January. This team was selected from 3,219 applicants and is a mix of massage therapists, physical therapists, child life specialists and occupational therapists. We will be working with children affected by a variety of emotional and physical healthcare needs. We will travel to orphanages, hospitals and special healthcare settings, as well as other various care settings. We will also work with those who suffer from emotional trauma and have been displaced by Typhoon Haiyan of 2013 and have been forced to take shelter on the street. Our team will strive to help each child feel valued, as well as provide education and training to the caregivers in these settings in order to make this work sustainable.
Why Nurturing Touch for Children is Important
As adults, many of us are familiar with the incredible benefits of massage and therapeutic touch. For children, these benefits are similar, BUT one of the most important benefits that children receive from nurturing touch is that of sensory integration. Sensory integration is the ability to organize all the feedback received from the five senses in the brain. It is known that sensory integration can improve a child’s ability to concentrate, learn, think abstractly, as well as develop his or her motor skills and self esteem. Touch is a major part of this process and provides a child with a chance to grow into a happy and healthy adult. The need for touch can be vastly greater for those children who may have illness, disease or special need. When these children are living in an institutional setting such as an orphanage, their physical needs are immediate and are often met with urgency. However, their emotional needs and personalized attention are very often forgotten.
It is my hope and dream, to make a difference in our global community by continuing to bring personalized care to those who are less fortunate, especially our youth. If we can provide just an iota of emotional, developmental, and essential care to children that are often forgotten in institutional settings, we are helping shape our tomorrow. These children are our tomorrow.
