As many of us know, our Mt. Clemens and surrounding Macomb communities are facing some challenges.
Our population is aging--1 in 4 Macomb county households contains a person over the age of 65 and this number will continue to grow. We have a responsibility as a community to keep people connected; 10-15% of our seniors struggle with depression and social isolation. They also increasingly struggle with poverty--The median income for senior households is 40% lower than the rest of the population. They need our support now more than ever.
Families in our Macomb communities are shifting as well. Married couple families are no longer the dominant household type in our community, and more families than ever rely on others for support. We have a responsibility to provide a safe, nurturing place for children in these families to grow and thrive.
It’s also really hard to be a kid today. 23% of kids report being bullied at school. The % of kids reporting a major depressive episode is higher than ever before, and Michigan is facing a 14% childhood obesity rate. Kids need to move, they need to connect and they need to know how to support one another.
But we’re not here to talk about problems. We exist to create solutions. At the Y, we’re committed to strengthening our communities and creating a place where everyone has the chance to grow and thrive. We believe that everyone can always be better, even you dear reader.
We would like to invite you to grow as an individual and as part of a community.
