ORGANIZER: IMPACT Melanoma
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
HAVE YOU SEEN 'EM? The yellow sunscreen dispensers in Boston's public parks and green spaces? If you haven't seen them in person, then maybe you saw them featured in the Boston-themed episode of The Simpsons! Marge said, "Free sunscreen? How progressive!" And she's right!
In person or in the news, you might have spied the 30 yellow free dispensers city-wide, each kept stocked with enough all-natural SPF 30 for 670 applications. That's 670 fewer chances for someone to develop deadly melanoma.
The Melanoma Foundation of New England was a major part of the partnership that placed these sunscreen dispensers so prominently in the Boston landscape. And the funds raised by our 2015 & 2016 Running for Cover Boston Marathon teams made it happen! What can we do for 2017?
The 2017 Boston Marathon will be my 17th marathon, my 12th Boston, and my 8th year running with Team Running for Cover. I'm honored to serve as coach again for this amazing group of athletes! Athletes committed not only to a grueling winter of training to complete one of the most challenging marathons in the world, but also to raising funds for the MFNE. What life-saving initiatives will this year's efforts fund? Whose lives will be touched by this year's team?

As a dermatologist, I hold the Melanoma Foundation of New England's mission close to my heart: to reduce the incidence of melanoma in the New England region through education, prevention and support. MFNE hosts a range of educational programs to spread awareness. I've been particularly involved with the Skinny on Skin program, teaching beauty professionals to recognize potential melanomas on the head, neck and scalp of their clients. As part of this program I've traveled to various New England sites, talking with hair stylists about the dangers of melanoma and teaching them how to look at their client's skin for signs of skin cancer. Last year we developed an online version of this program to bring it to beauty professionals across the country! I've also been involved with the new distance-learning, online version of the MFNE's successful Your Skin is In program, a program that educates teens and young adults about the risks of UV exposure and how to protect their own skin. This program has also gone live, educating teens all across the country!
Team Running for Cover is running the 2017 Boston Marathon to raise funds to support programs like these in MFNE's mission. All funds raised will be used to expand these educational programs throughout the New England Area and beyond. PLEASE HELP!
