THE STORY:

I finished!  5:49:21 (no, I did not win)  :-)   Everett took the pic at left just after I crossed the finish line...can you see your name?  I wrote all of them on the Tee....

What an experience....three big observations.  1) "WE RUN TOGETHER"...how true.  It was amazing how the runners and crowd came together with the city as an organic unit...I had the joy of experiencing that for every second of the 26.2 mile run...overhwhelming at the end.  2) I now understand what it means to "run through the pain"...the wall that is mile 22....easier said than done, but it works.  3) And most importantly, THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS SUPPORT!!  You've raised almost $8k to support emergency preparedness!!!  In aggregate, our team is at 142% of our goal...almost $300k...amazing!  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Warmest personal regards,

Perren and the MGH EP Team

.........................................................................................................................

In one week, I will join about 36,000 runners who will participate in this year's Boston Marathon.  Many are "first- and only-timers", like me, running to honor those patients and families impacted so tragically last year and to thank those in Boston who acted so heroically during the response.  The MGH Critical Care Center was an essential part of the team that cared for many of these patients and families, across the care continuum.  Of the 39 victims treated at Mass General, we admitted the six most critically injured to our ICU’s.  All of these patients recovered, completed rehab, and were discharged home.  You’ve probably learned of their stories on the air or in the press.  Moreover, many of our caregivers themselves were shaken. Some struggled to save lives that afternoon fearing that the next patient who came through the doors might be someone we knew.  We were delighted a few days later when President Obama visited our ICU’s to meet these patients and families and to honor our good work.

In the tragedy’s wake, we began to raise funds to support the MGH Emergency Response Fund. It provides social services for victims and families of disasters, as well as emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness training.  My goal is to raise $10,000 in support of MGH emergency preparedness. My wife Cindy and I made a leadership gift; please considering joining us in support of our patients, staff, and Hospital for the 118th running of the Boston Marathon.

We realize that there are many worthy charities that vie for your support. But this one is special, a one-time only chance to support MGH, emergency preparedness, and critical care on the 1-year anniversary of the bombing.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Warmest personal regards,

Perren
