Our hockey association was not going to roster a Junior Gold Team this year due to low initial registration. This program is for primarily 10 -12th grade high school students who chose not to try out or don't make their high school hockey teams. The 9 players that registered did not want to be split up among other area teams, so the parents stepped in to recruit more players and get the team rostered. What we discovered in our quest to form a team was that there were a lot of students that wanted to continue playing hockey in high school, but could no longer afford the ice bills. Junior Gold games increase to 90 minutes at the is level and ice is only sold in 1 hour blocks, so quite often you need to buy 2 hours of ice time to cover games. This can double the ice bill from the Bantam level where games are only 1 hour. Young men and women in high school need to be involved in something they love that gives them a sense of purpose and belonging. Organized team sports provide this, we did not want to see a group of young men that have been playing hockey since kindergarten if not sooner have to give up a sport they love because of an inability to pay. A couple families that could afford more than one registration on their credit cards in December sponsored the families that did not have money at that time and we are setting out to raise funds to help cover the costs this year. Going forward we would love to see a sustainable scholarship fund so that no student is ever denied the chance to pay due to the inability to pay. Please help us make this dream come true so hockey can be played by anyone, not just those affluent few.
