BENEFITING: NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

Friends of Matthew Power

THE STORY:

This is your opportunity to remember an exceptional writer and invest in quality journalism.

On March 10, 2014, journalist Matthew Power lost his life pursuing a story along the Nile River in Uganda.  A brilliant writer, Matt had an ability to craft stories both vividly written and with a kind understanding towards his subjects. He left behind a body of work as diverse and compelling as the adventures, tragedies, and passions of his subjects. And now, with heavy hearts, we face a future without him and his impactful prose.

To honor Matt – and to encourage young writers to pursue new stories – we have established the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University*. This annual award will support promising writers early in their careers with a stipend of $12,500 to bring forward an unreported story of importance in some overlooked corner of the world.

Matt was a tireless advocate and mentor for aspiring journalists, and the goal of this award is to provide the means to give them a start. The annual recipient will be able to immerse him or herself in a worthy project, learn through experience, and come back with a better story for it. Just as Matt would've wanted and encouraged.

More than $250,000 has been raised to permanently endow the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award.  We are continuing this Crowdrise campaign to encourage broad support of this important commemoration of Matt and his own ‘pay-it-forward’ notion of helping someone else get their first break.

Whether you knew him and his writing, or just believe in encouraging new journalistic talent, we hope that you’ll consider joining us with a tax-deductible gift today. As Matt put it himself:

"What has brought me to this sort of journalism is empathy for people and a desire to give voice to the full complexity of their stories. That voice is harder to express today than it has ever been, often lost beneath the chatter of the 24-hour news cycle and the blogosphere. We are evolving a media culture with a diminished sense of responsibility toward its subjects, and little consequence for its abdication . . .I believe the best journalists can be clear-eyed observers and advocates for justice at the same time, especially when they give their subjects space to speak for themselves."

We can never replace Matt's exceptional talent, but we can join together to ensure we cultivate writers with great potential and remember Matt's gift in doing so.

* The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University is managing the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award under the direction of tenured faculty member and writer Ted Conover, a dear friend and mentor to Matt. NYU charges no administrative fee to manage the endowment, and 100% of the annual distribution will support the selected recipient.
