In 2005, my beautiful mother noticed a small lump on the back of her neck. A week later it had doubled in size, and she went to her doctor to have it checked. Her doctors wasted no time in and removed the lump immediately, but unfortunately scans showed it had already spread to her liver, lungs, and brain. In less than 2 years in June 2007, she was gone.
In honor of my wonderful mother, I will be running the New York City Marathon on November 6th and raising funds for The Melanoma Education Foundation in their fight against cancer.
The Melanoma Foundation's goal is to educate the next generation on proper skin care and cancer prevention through school visits, teaching self check techniques to increase early detection (early detection can increase chances of survival from under 15% to 98%), and offering scanning services.
Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer in the world today, but is also one of the most preventable. Around 9 out of 10 cases of melanoma can be traced back to overexposure to the sun, so with your help we help prevent this horrible disease.
