BENEFITING: MELANOMA EDUCATION FOUNDATION INC
ORGANIZER: MELANOMA EDUCATION FOUNDATION INC
As some of you may know I'm soon to be undertaking my first (and rather likely my last...!) Marathon. Next Sunday, November 6th I will be waking up early to run the entire 26.2 miles of the New York Marathon.
I'm not planning on running this in vein - I think this is a great opportunity to raise a little cash close to the event for a good cause. I'm running in aid of Melanoma Education Foundation who promote awareness about skin cancer in young people, a cause that saves lives every year.
There are various scary statistics relating to this cancer: one of the most poignant being that One in Five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. If detected early the survival rate is around 98% in the US, but falls to 17% if not detected in adequate time.
On a more personal note (and as someone who was diagnosed with a Melanoma in the past) I would like to take this opportunity to urge you all to regularly check for new or funny-looking moles. Melanoma, if found early is extremely easy to treat - yet if left alone is deadly. You can find more info here: http://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/early-detection
Let me know if you're around on Marathon day and planning on watching the event - I'd really appreciate the support and any cheers. There is an app that you can track runners and I'll happily let you know my details in exchange for a high-five on the day.
Finally: after all this training I may just get around in slightly less than 4:30mins. This would be amazing. If anyone wants to pledge a little contingent of this, it'd be great motivation over the last few miles to make sure I end the right side of that time!
