THE STORY:
We are a group of women who love getting together to discuss books, politics, and how we can support our community, and we're raising money to test at least one rape kit from the Enough SAID initiative. Because that one kit isn't just a kit. It's a mom, a sister, a friend. It's us.
Enough SAID (Enough Sexual Assault in Detroit) is an independent collaboration between the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the Detroit Crime Commission and Michigan Women’s Foundation to bring justice to forgotten victims of sexual assault.
In 2009, more than 11,000 unopened, untested rape kits were found in a Detroit Police Department storage unit, representing thousands of unprosecuted sexual assaults, thousands of sex offenders still on the streets, and thousands of victims without the justice they deserve.
Economic constraints in Detroit and Wayne County have put this justice out of reach. But these victims shouldn’t have to wait another day.
MIWF has been granted federal and state government funding to get testing started, but 2,300 unopened kits still remain. Each rape kit costs $490 to process, and more funds are needed to investigate and prosecute the cases. Every victim deserves justice. Help us raise the money to get that justice, and make our community safer for everyone.
