EVENT: 2017 Million Meter Row

EVENT DATE: Jun 03, 2017

THE STORY:

For too many veterans, coming home doesn’t mean the war is over; all too often it means a new battle begins. Every day 20+ veterans die from suicide, and on is far too many. It’s hard to grasp such a vast statistic and know what it truly means until it affects you, a loved one, family member or friend. There is a way you can help save veterans in their struggles with coping with a return to life after war and service of our country.

This is my Uncle Marty, Martin Edward Stearns, born November 1949. He began serving in the Army’s 1st Cavalry in 1969 during the Vietnam. He piloted LOC’s (Light Observation Copter) during combat, often drawing fire and dropping smoke grenades to call in air support. He also flew in UH-1 Huey Gunships and was shot down during a combat mission. He survived, and for his service in combat he was awarded two Silver Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters as well as a Bronze Star. He left the military in 1972 after his service was completed, and came home in pursuit of a culinary career. Unfortunately, Uncle Marty had a hard time in his return to civilian life, and took his committed suicide in October 1979, shortly after my 6th birthday. I never knew my Uncle Marty, as I’d only met him when I was yet to turn 3 years old.

In memory of my Uncle Marty, and countless veterans like him, we’re taking on this battle in hopes it can be won for many more who struggle daily. On Saturday, June 3rd, we will be one of 40 teams rowing a total of 1,000,000 meters (25,000 m for each team) in an effort to raise money in support of Mission 22 (formerly Elderheart Inc.)

Please help support our team by donating to this cause and support veterans in need. It's through your donations and money raised through this event that make a difference in providing care and programs battling PTSD. As an event, the goal is to raise over $20,000, and our team has set a goal of raising $6,000 toward this goal. Help us reach our goal, motivate us while rowing, and more importantly fund needed care and services for our veterans to help save lives. A donation of $10, $25, $50 or even $100 will go a long way to help save a veteran.

Also, because we pay for our entry fees to cover the cost of the event, 100% of all money raised goes directly to help support the charity & our veterans.
