Challenge Details

The Challenge runs from Wednesday, April 20th at 12:00pm ET through Wednesday, May 18th at 1:59:59pm ET. The three organizations that raise the most money get cash grants.

1st Place gets $20,000
2nd Place gets $5,000
3rd Place gets $2,500

There will also be weekly Bonus Challenges for charities to win up to another $2,500. Bonus Challenges are weekly contests designed to keep momentum high and raise way more money for your cause plus, they're really fun.

The Best Part of the Challenge is that even if you don't win one of the grand prizes, you get to keep the money you raise during the campaign. So, so great. The Best Part of the Challenge is that even if you don't win any of the prize money you get to keep the money you raise during the campaign. So, so great. We said that twice on purpose.

What is a Challenge?

CrowdRise Challenges are friendly fundraising competitions designed to help organizations gain awareness, recognition, and most importantly, resources. Not only do you compete to win grand prizes, in this case $2,500-$20,000, but, by reaching out to your supporters and getting exposure from our Challenge partners, OceanFirst Foundation, you have a real opportunity to raise a lot of money.

Calendar

We want to make planning your campaign super easy so we've highlighted all the key dates and events that you should take note of throughout the Challenge. Please check out this calendar and have all your emails planned and are ready to go.

3/16 - Reach out to your board, staff and volunteers to let 'em know you're involved in the Challenge. Let them know it all begins on April 20th at 12pm ET and ask them to become fundraisers for your campaign. A $25 donor is great but a $250 fundraiser is a game changer. Check out the Email Drafts tab for a sample draft you can use.

3/23 - We're hosting a live workshop today. There are three sessions to choose from and not only will be it be super informative, it might even be slightly fun.

Session 1 - 9:30 to 11:30 am - FULL
Session 2 - 12:30 to 2:30 pm - SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE
Session 3 - 3:00 to 5:00 pm - SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE

To register, call 732-341-4676 or email your name(s) and contact information to info@oceanfirstfdn.org. Maximum 2 attendees per organization. Registrants will receive a confirmation with directions, what to bring, and where to park.

3/30 - Make sure you have a solid contact list. That means that you should have valid email addresses for every supporter, staff member, board member, friend and family member that you can think of. A solid list is key to good messaging which is key to doing well in a Challenge. Also, make sure to appoint someone to own your messaging. They should be referencing this calendar and knowing when to send out what email as well as when to post all your social media.

4/6 - With a couple weeks left to go you want to make sure your page is absolutely perfect. It's the spot that every supporter will land on so make sure your story section is compelling, you have multiple photos and even a video if possible.

4/13 - The Challenge starts in just one week. Now is a good time to reach out individually to every member of your board and make sure they've set up a fundraiser for your cause. They have amazing networks and their help will be huge for your campaign.

4/18 - The Challenge starts in two days. The key to these campaigns is messaging so make sure you're ready to send an email on April 20th right when the Challenge begins at 12pm ET. Also, make sure you're ready with social media and are constantly posting updates, motivating donation asks and sending thank-you's. Check out the Email Drafts tab and the Sample Social Media tab for examples.

4/20 - The Challenge starts today at noon (12pm) ET. Time to message everyone you know and ask 'em to fundraise for or donate to your cause.

4/20 - Not only does the Challenge begin today, but so does Bonus Challenge #1 which means you could win a cash grant. Such a big day. Every week throughout the Challenge, there will be Bonus Challenges. Bonus Challenges are amazing opportunities to get even more money for your cause, plus, they are super fun. You can check 'em all out Here.

4/22 - Email every single member of your board. Remind them that they need to fundraise for your organization. Give them the option to start a fundraiser or donate a large amount. Maybe $500. Or, better yet, $1,000. Basically, make it impossible for them not to help fundraise for you. They should want to do it, they are your biggest supporters.

4/26 - Bonus Challenge #2 begins today. Please Go Here for more details about all the Bonus Challenges.

4/28 - Email your supporters an update about the Challenge such as the prizes you've won, how much you've raised, etc. It's likely the amount you raise ends up being a direct reflection of the motivational messaging in the emails that you are able to send.

5/3 - Bonus Challenge #3 starts today and it's a super fun one. Please Go Here for more details on all the Bonus Challenges.

5/5 - Send an email to your entire list thanking them for all of their donations and support. No need to ask them to give in this email blast. Good just to email about how winning the Challenge can impact your organization and how you really appreciate everything your supporters are doing.

5/10 - Bonus Challenge #4 begins today at 2pm ET. Please Go Here for more details on all the Bonus Challenges.

5/12 - There are just six days left in the Challenge. Make sure to send thank you's to all your donors. The more appreciated they feel, the more likely they are to give again and again.

5/13 - Email your board again and let them know there is still an opportunity to fundraise and give. Every donation counts through the final hours of the Challenge. Tapping into their networks is so, so important. Also today, email everyone else on your list with an update about where you're at in the Challenge and how much you've raised so far. Remind them that every donation counts and that there are less than two weeks to go.

5/16 - There are just two days left in the Challenge. It's all over on May 18th at 1:59:59pm ET. Every donation counts until the Challenge is over so ask everyone to please help in every way possible.

5/18 - The Challenge ends today at 1:59:59pm ET. On this day, definitely encourage your supporters to donate to your cause in the last few hours of the Challenge but also make sure they don't donate at the last minute. It takes time to process donations so it's not good enough to press the donate button in the last minutes today. You need to have the transaction processed and completed before the end of the Challenge.

OUR BEST TIPS

Tip: Your Fundraising Page
The more compelling your page is, the more likely people will stick around to learn about your organization

Tell your story.
Add a logo, lots of great photos and a video if at all possible. Some great examples can be seen Here, Here and Here.
It's fair to say that small donors want to buy something that they can tell their friends about instead of just giving to operational funds. If you can make your fundraiser tangible by suggesting donation amounts to your supporters that will lead to real life results, that's even better. "$20 will help provide shelter to a domestic violence survivor" is a good example.
Add some stories of those you’ve helped to show donors the great work they’re supporting.
Add some team members right away and Click Here for some quick instructions to make it happen.
Upload the CrowdRise Widget to your own site on launch day, April 20th at noon ET. To make it happen, just log in to your account and go to your fundraising page. Click on the Edit Fundraiser tab and select My Fundraiser Widget on the right. Copy and paste the code into your website html. If you don't know how to do that, just send the code to your web person and they'll know what to do with it. Or Email Us and we’ll be able to help solve everything.

Tip: Engage With Donors and Fundraisers
Use contests, online tools, email and social media to spark interest and get donations.

Start with supporters, employees, volunteers and your board. Check out the Email Drafts section for sample emails you can send.
Email drives donations way, way, way better then social media, and typically, the more people you can email, the more money you’ll raise for your charity.
If possible, try emailing in batches of 10, instead of 1000 or even 100. Making everyone feel slightly less anonymous will lead to more engagement.
Use Facebook and Twitter to update people about your fundraising campaign but don't rely on it. Email converts 100x better than social media.
Use tools like fundraising widgets and get your fundraiser posted on your site, blog and all over the internet.
Make your donors and fundraisers feel cool and appreciated. Be so good at thanking them and communicating with them that they're psyched to be a part of your team. The goal is to get everyone to share your message with their own friends and family.
Get people excited about your campaign and turn your donors into fundraisers. A $25 donor is great but a $250 fundraiser is a game changer.
Offer incentives to engage donors and fundraisers and talk about them in emails and on social media. Ex: Donate at least $50 to our cause and we'll send you a [YOUR ORGANIZATION] tee shirt.

Tip: Keep the Energy High
Momentum is so important. Keep pushing right up to the deadline.

Check your fundraising page statistics constantly to understand what's working.
Post updates about your fundraising page at least every other day to keep people informed about how it's going.
Use deadlines to create some urgency and rally support.

Tip: Raise the Most Money
Make sure that you'll raise the most money possible while your campaign and cause are in the spotlight.

Expand your audience. Don't just rely on your supporters, compel your volunteers, your board and your staff to get involved in the campaign too.
Continue to post updates even after the campaign is over.
Launch a follow-up campaign. Please Email Us when you're ready and we'll help solve everything.

DONATION QUESTION DRAFTS

On very rare occasions, organizations encounter questions about fee structures from their donors. We're proud to say that we have the lowest fees in the charitable platform world and by being a part of the OceanFirst 20th Anniversary Charity Challenge, your fees will be no more than 3% if you use WePay as your payment processor. To learn more about the fee structure, please reference the FAQs section of this Toolkit. However, to be proactive, we wanted to provide you with two simple drafts on the off chance you get a an email from a donor. If you have any questions, need help at all, or just want to chat, please Email Us and we'll get right back to you.

DRAFT FOR DONOR WHO HAS MADE A DONATION AND THEN INQUIRED ABOUT THE FEES THAT THEY COVERED

[NAME],

Thank you so much for your donation to [ORGANIZATION NAME]. Your contribution helps us to [ENTER INFORMATION ABOUT THE DONATION PURPOSE] and we really appreciate your support.

All charitable platforms charge fees to fundraise on their site and a mandatory credit card fee. Those fees are taken out even when you use the donate button on our own site. CrowdRise's platform fee is 5.9% and the credit card fee is 2.9% + $0.30.

What makes CrowdRise unique is that they offer our donors the option to cover all of our fees including what the credit card companies take. With this set-up, you've generously covered our fees so that 100% of your donation will go directly to our cause. If every donor covers the fees our cost is zero.

And, just so you have some perspective, the cost of fundraising via other methods (direct mail, hosting an event or gala, advertising, etc.) averages about 20% to 30% of our fundraising cost. So, covering the fees and allowing us to keep 100% of the funds donated is a big deal.

We hope that all makes sense and really do appreciate your support. If you have any other questions, you can reach out directly to CrowdRise at OceanFirst@CrowdRise.com and they'll get right back to you.

Thanks again for everything.

Bonus Challenges start at end at various times. Please Click Here to check out the details on each Bonus Challenge.
What are the upfront costs of using CrowdRise for this Challenge?
For the duration of the OceanFirst 20th Anniversary Charity Challenge, we're guaranteeing that every organization who uses WePay as their payment processor will get a 3% effective rate, and that includes credit card fees. So amazing, right?

Here's how we make it happen...

The per transaction fee for Challenge organizations is 5.9% + credit card fees (2.9% + $0.30). And, we're giving all participants a Donor Cover the Fees button on their donor checkout page. That means that each time you get a donation, your donors will have the option to cover your fees, and if they all choose to, you’ll essentially be getting free fundraising.

If your donors don't cover enough of your fees to get you to a 3% effective rate for this Challenge, CrowdRise will make up the difference.

Please note the guarantee includes credit card fees but does exclude all individual donations of $1,000 or more.

As mentioned above you have to use WePay as your payment processor in order to take advantage of this amazing pricing. If you're already set up on WePay, great, you don't have to do anything else. If you are not set up on WePay, please see below for some quick instructions.

Right now there are over 2,000 organizations using this functionality including Unicef, Volunteers of America and Make a Wish. The current effective rate for all the organizations on this plan is 1.67%. Or, said another way, the organizations are keeping on average $98.33 out of every $100 raised. This pricing structure usually costs $50/month but we’re giving it to you free for the duration of the Challenge. So, so great. If you have any questions about this at all, please please Email Us and we'll solve everything.

How to switch to WePay

• Log in to your charity account Here: https://www.crowdrise.com/account
• Moving to WePay costs nothing and you’ll get access to your donations faster with all the money you raise transferring to your bank account.
• When you switch to WePay, you'll have the opportunity to request the funds on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Pretty awesome.
• If you have any questions about any of this, please Email Us and we'll dig right in.

That was the longest FAQ ever. But such a good one.
How do I find out if I've won a Bonus Challenge or a Grand Prize?
Winners will get notified by email or phone after each Bonus Challenge ends and the winners will get posted Here. You can also Email Us for a winners list and anything else in the world. Check out the Challenge Rules for a little more info about how to win a grand prize and the Bonus Challenges.

Please note that it can take up to seven (7) business days to verify the winners. All Challenge participants will receive an email after the winners are determined and you can read more about it all in the Challenge Rules.

Do offline donations count towards the Challenge?
Offline donations are cash or check received by your organization during the course of the Challenge. Offline donations do not count towards the the contests and prizes in the Challenge, but we encourage you to enter any offline donations you receive on your own fundraising page to show the overall impact of the Challenge. Remember, offline donations will show on your individual fundraising page but they will not show on the Challenge leaderboard.
How and when will the Bonus Challenges and overall Challenge prizes be awarded?
The prizes will be delivered by the Challenge partner within approximately seventy-five (75) days after the all required paperwork is returned to receive a Challenge Grant. Check out the Challenge Rules for a little more info on grand prize fulfillment.
What happens after the Challenge is over?
When the Challenge officially ends on May 18th at 2pm ET, the DONATE button on your page will be disabled. Meaning that you will not be able to receive any donations to your OceanFirst 20th Anniversary Charity Challenge fundraising page after this time.

However, if you want to start a new fundraiser, Email Us and we can set up a redirect for your page.
I have an event that I'm doing around the same time as the Challenge, how can I tie the event to this Challenge to really maximize donor giving?
Great question. We have lots of tips to help create momentum and drive donations during your event. Check 'em all out and please let us know if you have any questions.

• Have multiple laptops and/or tablets at your event that are set up on your OceanFirst 20th Anniversary Charity Challenge fundraising page. Have staff or volunteers stand at those stations to help guide attendees through the simple donation process.
• Make sure your staff is familiar with the details of the Challenge so if approached, or if running a donate station, they are ready to answer questions and motivate their attendee to give.
• If you have a slide show or video at your event, make sure to add your fundraiser URL to each page so that throughout the presentation, donors can give on their phones or at your computer stations.
• Are you selling tickets to your event on Eventbrite? Link your registration to your Challenge page and encourage your attendees to become fundraisers. If you need any help setting it up, please Email Us and we'll be ready.
• Ask your emcee to talk about the Challenge and how winning would impact your cause. Use that stage to encourage donations and get the crowd excited about the opportunity you have with the Challenge.
• Use games to help create a fun atmosphere that encourages giving. For instance, every table that donates at least $250 gets entered to win a prize. By using their mobile phones, they don't even have to leave their seat to make it happen.
• Offline donations do not count towards the Challenge so if you have an auction of some sort and want to use it towards the Challenge, encourage donors to bid with their online donations. Maybe it's the first to donate $1,000 wins the prize or the donor that gives the most in the next 15 minutes wins the prize. The more you can move your donations online, the better it'll be for your leaderboard status.
• Check out the Bonus Challenges Here and get your attendees to help you try to win the week of your event. They're fun and accessible to everyone.
"Hey, hey, easy kids. Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes... or perhaps you don't want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away?"
No chance you’re still looking at this but if you are, Email Us with the name of the movie the quote above is from and you'll automatically be entered to win a pizza party for your organization at the end of the Challenge. Click Here for the pizza party rules.
