THE STORY:

Hello! You have reached the Fundraising page of Mark & Terry, A.K.A. the "Old Spokes". In April we will be embarking on a 4,000 mile cross country (literally) Cycle Journey to out ride cancer! Cancer has shown its nasty face in both of our lives (as you can read below), in response, we are not only completeing a once in a lifetime bucketlist item, but raising money for Lazarex Cancer Foundation. Lazarex is a one of a kind non-profit that financially directly assists advanced stage cancer patients to enable them to access potentially life-saving treatment. Yes, your donation will be going directly to a patient who needs it. We know, amazing. To learn more about their incredible work go to www.lazarex.org

Below are short snippets about us, in addition to our purpose in taking on this adventure. We hope you enjoy. For more about our journey visit our blog at:

Mark Ballock Biography “Out Riding Cancer”

I was born August 8, 1957. I have an adventurous spirit that has lead my life from a young child.  Early in my life my family camped during the summer months in Yosemite. It was during those years that I learned to love the outdoors and was eager to partake in all of what the outdoors offered, from hiking, fishing, horseback riding, tubing, and backpacking. During my high school years I was drawn to photography and relished in learning everything that a camera and dark room could do and was the student yearbook photographer for three years. Years later I turned professional and enjoyed fine art, wedding, and portraiture photography.

My adventurous spirit and interest in the world around me kept my appetite wet, and at 18 years of age I became a recreational private pilot. I enjoyed the freedom of air travel and touching down in small out of the way airports exploring on foot the surrounding communities. Family responsibilities, life changes, and rising cost interrupted my flying and I was grounded to routine family life.

I found myself at 49 years old working hard and needing another adventure that would be adventurous and challenging.  I took up long distance touring cycling, and at 50 years old I set out with my road bike from Seattle, WA to San Francisco, CA a total of 1,100 miles and was hooked on this form of transportation. Since that time I have ridden many thousands of cross country miles throughout the United States. Now at 58 my riding continues, and my purpose to ride has changed to giving back to communities by riding in fundraising rides for organizations and causes that speak loudly to me. Thank you in advance for your support.

Terry Cunningham's biography and reason to “Out Ride Cancer.”

I am 66 years old and was born in 1949 with bilateral cataracts.  I had several operations when I was 5 months old.  While I do not remember any of those procedures I have read the history and am very glad of the technology used in 1949 that saved my sight and that improved my life.

My Father developed prostate cancer in his 50’s and was diagnosed with lung cancer in his 70’s.  I saw the fear and sadness these 2 diseases caused.  Lung cancer took his life in 1999, and I miss him every day.

I have seen research and technology improve medical capabilities to change and save lives.  As I have gotten older it has become clear to me that mankind needs to find the cure for and prevention of many of the diseases that take lives too soon.  When I ask myself what I can do to help I realize that I may be able to raise some funds to add to the research.  Those funds added to funds raised by others might be the extra needed to solve the problem and cure a disease like cancer.

During my retired life I have volunteered in the performing arts and fundraising for the arts.  Art of all kinds is important for all of us.  It makes our lives richer and more enjoyable.  And maybe art helps save lives.  I know it changes them for the better.

Also, during my retired life I have become interested in bicycling for a few reasons.  I enjoy the ride that is slower than an auto and faster than walking or running.  You can travel to interesting places while enjoying the beauty of many landscapes. You receive health benefits from the exercise while socializing with your riding partners on the road and at every stop.  You can meet new people who are interesting and are interested in you. Maybe another benefit of peddling might be to benefit others who need help.

I would like to help improve and save lives by raising funds for the prevention and cure of cancer.  That is why I want to add fundraising to my next ride; a ride I was going to do, but now can do for a wonderful cause.

My wife, Carol, (pictured on the horse) is saging for us! (suport driver!) She is 68 years old and has a degree in Allied Medicine from Ohio State.  She has worked as a perfusionist (running the pump for open heart surgery) for many years with OSU Hospital, Kaiser and UCSF.  Like me she is retired and swims at 24 Hour Fitness almost every day. Her Mother died of lung cancer at 54 years of age. She is doing this to help fight cancer. Thank you for supporting the three of us!
