Using an extensively-verified, simple-to-learn meditation technique, the Operation Warrior Wellness initiative is changing the lives of hundreds of veterans and military personnel who are gripped by the nightmare of post-traumatic stress disorder.
“Transcendental Meditation reduced my anger and outbursts of rage. I don’t dwell as much on my past. I have hope for the first time since I returned from Afghanistan.” — Luke Jensen, OEF veteran
I. COMBATTING AN EPIDEMIC OF PTSD AMONG OUR VETERANS
Staggering statistics from the Veterans Administration show that more soldiers are dying from the trauma of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan than at the hands of enemy combatants. Over 400,000 veterans have been diagnosed with PTSD since 2001, and 22 veterans die from suicide each day.
Operation Warrior Wellness (OWW), an initiative of the David Lynch Foundation, helps veterans, active-duty service personnel and their families overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through evidence-based meditation. OWW partners with Army and Marine Bases, VA Medical Centers, military colleges and veterans service organizations across the country to reach current and former military personnel in need.
The initiative uses the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, a simple, easy-to-learn, mental technique that has been shown, by over 340 peer-reviewed studies and $26 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health, to be uniquely effective in relieving stress and stress-related illness.
- 40-55% reduction in symptoms of PTSD and depression
- 42% decrease in insomnia
- 30% improvement in satisfaction with quality of life
- 25% reduction in plasma cortisol levels
- Decreased high blood pressure–on par with first-line antihypertensives
- 47% reduced risk of cardiovascular-related mortality
III. HELP OUR VETERANS WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST MENTAL INJURY
“TM helps you de-stress and relax. It takes the edge off. I used to be on 20 pills a day that were prescribed by the VA, many of which were narcotics that I became addicted to. Now I’m no longer on them, and TM has transformed my life into something sane again.” —Sgt. Lou Tavarez, Special Forces, United States Army
