THE STORY:

Smack in the middle of my sophomore year of high school my world stood still.  I was 15 years old and diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The following four months were dictated by chemotherapy treatments. My family and friends watched helplessly as my body and mind endured the most emotionally and physically challenging months of my life. I have thankfully been cancer-free since completing my chemotherapy treatments. I am now 31 years old. I am an ovarian cancer survivor. A scar that stretches hip to hip reminds me daily that I am one of the lucky ones.

I don't know what path my life would have taken had I not received that horrifying diagnosis. But, I do know one thing for sure, it has put everything in very clear perspective for me. Every challenge I have chosen for myself or that life has presented, I continually find myself saying, "I CAN do THIS because nothing will compare to what I (and so many others) have endured in fighting cancer.” I am living my dreams. I am an ovarian cancer survivor, a wife, a mommy, an auntie, a friend, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, a proud three-time Florida State University alum, an education researcher, a member of the Big Bend Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, and a RUNNER.

I began running in April of 2015 on a whim. My first run was a grueling (yes, that’s how it felt at the time) 2 miles. It was hard but I have grown to love running. It has made me look at everyday things very differently - every bump in the road, crack in the sidewalk, overgrown bush, pesky puddle, broken streetlight, sparkling pond, glowing morning moon, dreadful hill, early morning shooting star, dismal weather forecast, and perfect running shoes. I have made great friends through running. I have learned that my mind and body were made to endure.

I have since completed two half marathons and several shorter races – even placing 2nd in my age group in one of them.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think I had this kind of endurance. Now, I have been given the opportunity of a lifetime - to run in the TCS New York City Marathon on the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's NYC Team Teal!

The NOCC's mission is to save lives by fighting tirelessly to prevent and cure ovarian cancer, and to improve the quality of life for survivors. The NYC Team Teal will run 26.2 miles on November 6, 2016, and I hope you will consider supporting me in this effort. All proceeds raised through the TCS New York City Marathon will help us continue to expand the NOCC's programs and provide vital research funding.

Your donations mean the world to me and my fellow survivors. Your donations honor those who have been lost to this terrible disease. Your donations pave the way for a cure.
