Help Pets Alive Westchester win $50,000 to fix our Building
On March 14th what started off as small cracks in our building grew to be so large that you could see through them to the outside of the building. The floors were beginning to sink in some areas, new cracks were rapidly forming, and the first floor door frames began to buckle as the second floor started to show signs of a possible collapse. We worked with a group of engineers to evaluate the issues and they determined that we had no other choice but to evacuate immediately until the cause of the shifting could be determined.
For months we rented space at a local kennel for our dogs and found foster homes for our cats and rabbits. Thanks to a huge outpouring of support we were able to ensure our animals safety and wellbeing was addressed and even continued to find adoptive homes working out of trailers that we leased. The generosity of so many provided the funds for this work to continue and the animals care never deterred.
After a full engineer investigation it was found that while the building was in need of repair it was safe to move back in. And so we did – on July 1st! Our insurance covered the drilling and testing costs but not the costs we endured at this time to continue operations including 3 storage units, 2 office trailers, the cost of a generator and the cost to board our dogs. Northwind Kennels kindly gave us a discount on boarding fees, but with 40 dogs living at the facility the cost has been huge at $11,000 per month ($10 per dog, per day) which at this time is an expense that we certainly are not prepared for in our already tight budgets.
Operations are back in full swing but with winter coming the cracks need to be remedied at this time to protect the animals from the coming winter – which is predicted to be worse than last year! Come Spring 2015 when the ground has thawed we will focus on reinforcing the areas of the building’s foundation that need extra support. With this construction we know that Pets Alive Westchester’s future will be protected but will need to find the extra funds to afford all of the work necessary.
