THE STORY:

Ana Blandon a young leader from a rural community in North of Nicaragua and an international scholar at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) as part of the Scholarships for Education and Economic Development (SEED) Program which is funded by USAID and administred by CIED/Georgetown University.

Ana has the skills and knowledge to be a change agent for her community and country.

Her current project is designed to develop and commit to provide recycling bins to reduce waste and mosquito reproduction and empower students in Estelí, Nicaragua. Because of the lack of dumpsters, trash ends up polluting and creating dams in the river, which encourages mosquito reproduction and the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. She will partner with Family United to train and educate students on recycling principles and create the recycling bins out of plastic bottles that have been collected by the local government. She will measure success by placing 50 recycling bins in the city’s streets by April 2017.

Ana’s project not only takes on waste management at the local level, it also empowers the community to practice sustainable recycling program in the long term.
