For the sum of $5000, The Nooristan Foundation would be able to provide two more micro hydro systems to villages in Nuristan. These systems would provide electricity to the villages during the difficult winter that lies ahead. Additionally, these micro hydro systems would catalyze development throughout the province and contribute to improved quality of life and opportunities for the Nuristani people. The micro hydro system is potentially the most important piece in creating the foundation for enduring development in Nuristan. The sustainment of electricity would empower each village to facilitate the creation of educational and medical infrastructure that would cascade throughout the area. We're asking you to assist us in providing this key piece in the development of Nuristan by helping us raise $5000 to install micro hydro systems in two new villages before the onset of the winter season. Our project is called 'Power a Village'.

Nuristan Province in Afghanistan is among the most remote and impoverished places on Earth. Mountainous and isolated, Nuristan's challenging terrain and cultural isolation often act as significant impediments to aid and development programs. The cultural isolation of the Nuristani people, Nuristan’s history as an embattled and impoverished region, and lack of outside acknowledgement and understanding of the needs of Nuristan’s citizens often conflate to create an environment that impedes outside aid efforts. As a result, Nuristanis often live without access to necessities such as electricity and educational opportunities.
Aid and development projects are most effective when the basic needs of the people are met first. Consistent access to clean water, viable and sustainable sources of electricity, and education infrastructure comprise the foundation of successful development programs for Nuristanis today for several reasons. Educational opportunities are extraordinarily limited in Nuristan. Many of the obstacles that impede development in Nuristan arise from the lack of one essential need: sustainable sources of electricity. Micro hydro systems are a key component in alleviating the need for electricity in the remote villages of Nuristan.
Many of the obstructions that impede real development and opportunity for Nuristanis rise almost entirely from a lack of access to electricity. In this way, the problems wracking Nuristan's development are derived of human origins and in this way the problems can be solved by human beings. In order to surmount these obstacles, the villages must have access to sustainable sources of electricity. As electricity is available to villages, literacy rates will rise as women and children will be able to study by artificial light. As a result, The Nooristan Foundation can improve education by introducing mobile libraries to the villages. Low quality of life, particularly for women and children, is largely a by-product of the decreased opportunities to education. The “Power A Village” project is an important step in alleviating the burden of lack of access to education in Nuristan.
The Nooristan Foundation’s 'Power A Village' program will provides micro hydro systems to villages in order to facilitate an environment conducive to advancing educational opportunities. Electricity is an important first step in improving education and opportunities for Nuristanis. As a result of this program, development will cascade and blossom throughout Nuristan. Because of the nature of daily life in Nuristan, many women and children work throughout the day in an effort to provide sustenance to their families and their village. The electricity created by the micro hydro systems would provide light for each village. In creating electricity and light, the micro hydro systems would set the conditions for reading and learning unbounded by the restrictions of darkness. Teachers could provide reading and writing instruction even at night, mobile libraries would support burgeoning education, and literacy rates would rise. This cascading development would emerge from the provisioning and installation of micro hydro systems.
Please help The Nooristan Foundation begin empowering the people of Nuristan by supporting our effort to raise enough funds to provide micro hydro systems to two villages in Nuristan. Your donation will make a world of difference in the lives of countless generations of villagers in Nuristan.
