BENEFITING: PROJECT PURPLE
ORGANIZER: PROJECT PURPLE
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
There's this phenomena of fundraising for endurance events that have really sparked interest in the last few years. It's the idea that you are committing yourself to a challenge that requires determination and hard work, and what makes the pain and sweat worthwhile is knowing that you are also raising money for a great cause. I know many of you have become familiar with this from my past campaigns, but this organization has a particular significance for me.
As many of you may know, I am no stranger to loss. My sister passed away from a very rare disease in 2007. A few years later, on that very same day, my aunt passed away from Pancreatic Cancer. Fast forward to 2013, I met my boyfriend Alex Palios, and we instantly connected over our bond of running and our involvement in non-profits. I learned that Alex too lost a loved one; he lost his father to Pancreatic Cancer in 2012. He became involved with Project Purple, and has since then dedicated his life to honoring his father's memory as an active board member of the organization.
It's a funny thing...there seems to be this certain characteristic, that certain sense of humbleness and understanding of life that immediately bonds you and another person when you realize they too have experienced the loss of a loved one, especially at our age. I do believe that everything happens for a reason - we meet the people we are supposed to meet in life, at certain moments in our life. Through my experience with Project Purple in the last two years, I have met some incredible people who are fighting to find a cure for this horrible disease. Pancreatic Cancer is the #3 cancer killer and the least funded of the top 10 cancers. There is so much more work to be done.
On November 6, 2016 I will be running in the NYC Marathon -- the largest marathon in the world. I will be running 26.2 miles across the 5 boroughs of New York, pushing myself to the limits both mentally and physically. This is a big challenge, yet a small feat in comparison to those who are fighting for their lives.
Please support me on my journey to raising $7,000 for this incredible cause. Thank you in advance for your support.
