THE STORY:

PLEASE NOTE:  If you received an email directing you to this site, it was in error - the 2016 Robocall fundraiser is at https://www.crowdrise.com/ny-refuse-the-test-robocall-2016/fundraiser/debescobar.  If you mistakenly donated on this site in 2016 do not worry - the funds will still come to the bank account set up for the fundraiser.  THANK YOU EVERYONE, please spread the word.

The goal of this fundraiser was to raise $20,000, in order to pay for a robocall that would go to all NY parents, advising them of their right to refuse high-stakes tests for their children.  We were able to purchase the calls that were needed, but will keep this site open until April 14th. Any remaining funds that are donated will go towards continued work to help parents receive information and assist them in refusing the tests.  On Sunday, Zephyr Teachout's robocall message, and Aixa Rodriguez' Spanish robocall, went to hundreds of thousands of New York State parents.  Channel WNYC will air the message on Monday, and press releases will be sent out with an mp3 of the recording.  We hope to use other avenues of communication to parents in the coming days.

We believe that this work that all of our donors enabled will greatly increase the number of test refusals this year, invalidating the results of the tests and denying the state and federal government their data.  By doing so, we hope to send a strong political message that we will no longer stand for our children being abused in the service of falsely labeling schools and teachers as failures.

Parents across the state have expressed concern about the increasing emphasis on tests that are ruining the education of their children, but many do not know what their rights are to refuse the tests. Test preparation crowds out creative instruction and authentic projects. Children are stressed, often pulling out their hair, crying, shaking, or vomiting during testing. The tests are designed for failure, calibrated to an SAT score of 1630, with cut scores adjusted after the scoring of the tests, which makes sure that 70% of children fail. Governor Cuomo, at the behest of his hedge fund pro-charter contributors, uses faulty statistics gleaned from these tests to declare public schools failures, and then usurp local control to close schools and fire teachers. The end goal is to open more private charter schools, fire union teachers, and replace those teachers with nonunion lower-wage, less-qualified employees. Our children are the pawns in this political game. It is time to fight back, and we have.  Thank you for joining this fight.
