Replacing textbooks with free digital OERs (Open Education Resources) is an essential part of providing affordable education to a billion children at a time (that is, all of them). Education saves lives, fights corruption, and gets people out of poverty and oppression. If we end poverty completely and get everybody up to the same living standards, we will increase global GDP by about $200 trillion. How much is that worth to you? Sugar Labs needs only $10,000 to get this part of the program going at full strength. That's about a thousandth of a cent per child.
Netbook and tablet computers cost less than printed textbooks, except in countries without adequate textbooks, and often without teachers or schools. Volunteers can create Open Education Resources with very modest hardware and software support, as at FLOSS Manuals and the new Sugar Labs Replace Textbooks Web site. FM does manuals for Free Software. We need a separate server at Sugar Labs for free textbook replacements, and modest funding for support.
Sugar Labs is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy, a US 501(c)3 nonprofit. SFC has set up a fund to receive donations to Sugar Labs.
