THE STORY:

Rob Ranieri wrote -

I started racing marathons in 2007 as a way to have some fun while losing weight.  Before chastising me for combining the words 'fun' and 'marathon' in the same sentence, it is important to note that some of my most rewarding friendships developed through race training.  I suppose there is a strange sense of camaraderie that one develops when experiencing such torturous conditions.  What started as something fun has now developed into something much bigger...running for a cause...which is why I'm reaching out for your support to help me raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of New York (RMHC).  SEE MORE BELOW!!

When my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2010, our family was given the choice to either let the cancer take control or to take control of the cancer; we chose the latter.  In addition to supporting my mom both physically and mentally, I decided to run the 2011 ING New York Marathon in her honor.  With the overwhelming support of so many friends and family members, together we raised over $4,000!!  Our financial support went directly to Team Continuum who is dedicated to helping cancer patients of all ages and with all types of cancer.  It turns out that we didn't just take control of mom's cancer...we actually served it a big can of whoop ass.  I'm happy to report that my mom is healthy and living her life to the fullest.  She was even published in a book of inspiring women to describe how she overcame her challenge... the book can be purchased on Amazon for anyone who is interested: http://amzn.to/1inxGEr

It is now 2014, and I am due for a new challenge.  I've raced Miami, Austin, Chicago, and New York.  Since running New York in 2011, I've experienced a number of different personal challenges.  This race is incredibly personal to me as it signifies a new chapter in my life.  The obstacles I've overcome have made me a stronger man, and I anticipate this to be my strongest and fastest race yet.

I am running this race in honor of my father, Nick, by supporting a charity that is very near and dear to his heart: The Ronald McDonald House of New York (RMHC).  My dad has been an RMHC supporter for over 30 years, and he continues to find ways to support the charity through donation and sponsorship efforts.  Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children – a long time to be away or to divide a family.  And, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support.  A Ronald McDonald House is that “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost.  The Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest.  RMHC believes that when a child is hospitalized the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.  The New York House is located on East 73rd Street between First and York Avenues and offers thousands of children and their families these extraordinary services.

As the patriarch of our family, my father instilled in us a number of essential values... especially the importance of benevolence.  My dad works tirelessly to make sure that those by whom he is surrounded are living fulfilled lives.  I am consistently amazed by his warm heart, bright spirit, and intelligent mind, and I am honored by the opportunity to aid his charity efforts.  I don't have a required goal for this race entry, rather I am simply fundraising to carry on my father's spirit.  My personal goal is to raise over $2,000 so I am asking for your help to donate whatever amount you can to support these children and families in need... no amount is too small (or too big).

Thank you in advance for your support!

Love,

Rob
