THE STORY:

My Story

My name is Dylan Conlin and I am a sophomore at Mountain Lakes High School. I row for the Mountain Lakes Rowing Club, based in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. I row in the Men's Varsity Lightweight 8, and we have recently qualified for the US Rowing Youth Nationals, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We beat the boat behind us by .003 seconds, which is an achievement that is rare to see in the Olympics. What makes this achievement even more astounding, is that two of our rowers (out of eight) have IBD. The average rower goes through an insane amount of pain as it is already. These two guys, are the toughest people I know. It takes a high level of perseverance to do what they do, and I am honored to be helping them. We are rowing at Nationals on June 8th, and we are currently training for it now. You should look through the pictures to the left to see our boat and our accomplishments.

What is IBD?

IBD includes Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Crohns and UC are both lifelong diseases and are both genetic. Symptoms include constant cramping, stomach aches, diarrhea, so on and so forth. They are both auto-immune disease, so the immune systems are attacking themselves. Scientists practically have no idea what causes it, and there is much to be discovered. There is no cure, but there are treatments. My best friend Paul, for one, is on Remicade, a bimonthly infusion treatment where he has to go into the hospital for about 3 hours with the medicine being pumped into his blood via IV. This medicine supresses his immune system, making it easier to contract other ailments.

Donations

Since the US Rowing National Championships is such a public event, we thought this would be a terrific platform to raise money and fight against IBD. Each donation will sponsor 20 meters of our final race at the National Championships in Tennessee. As far as donations go, we aim to raise $5000. Therefore, we ask for about a minimum of $20 per sponsorship ($1 per meter), but ANYTHING HELPS.  Lets conquer Crohns and Colitis one stroke at a time.

All proceeds will benefit the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America.
