I'm so very excited...(and a bit nervous) and honored to be running in my FIRST (and possibly ONLY)NYC Marathon. I started my 4th decade by walking a marathon and a half to raise money for breast cancer, so I decided the best way to end this decade would be RUNNING...(possibly to deny that I'm getting closer to the next Mile Marker (aka 50). I'm running to honor and help a childhood/family friend, Michele Weinberg Karl. (click arrows under photo to see the Weinberg Karl Family!)
Our parents were college friends and we spent our childhoods together, spending holidays, especially July 4ths together, giving us a lifetime of memories and beautiful events to celebrate.
Michele had never heard about PKD until her youngest son, Gabe, was born in 2006 and given the diagnosis of ARPKD/CHF (autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease). A month later her oldest son, Max, was also diagnosed with ARPKD/CHF at the age of six. Currently there are no treatments and no cure for ARPKD/CHF and Max and Gabe deal with the disease on a daily basis, although Max does appear to have a milder version and only deals with high blood pressure. Gabe takes 12 pills a day and a daily shot and suffers from high blood pressure, growth issues, extremely large kidneys, declining kidney function, bile back up in his gall bladder, and daily stomach pain. Many babies die from ARPKD at birth and many children have many more struggles with this disease than Max and Gabe. The hope is that the PKD Foundation will continue to fund research grants so that one day no one suffers the effects of PKD.
For years I have stood at the 26 mile marker of the marathon, rooting runners on...so now I'm asking for support from you. Whatever you can give will be appreciated. Every mile I run, and every dollar you can spare, will help provide Gabe and Max the chance to have their own lifetime of wonderful memories and a better life.
My goal is to raise $4000 to end my 40's with a bang. And if you are waiting at mile 26...well, I'd love to have a hug when it's all over...ok...maybe a shower first and THEN a hug!
