EVENT: 2014 TCS New York City Marathon

EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014

Alyssa and Paul Sumski

THE STORY:

I'm proud to be running the TCS NYC Marathon to help children and adults with disabilities in NE and Central Pennsylvania served by Allied Services. Any size donation will help. Donate $30 in my honor and you'll be eligible to receive a cool moisture-wicking Ryan's Run exercise shirt.

Alyssa and Paul Sumski live in Scranton, Pennsylvania with their three children Gregory, Mason, and Sarah. Alyssa is a medical coder for Maxim Healthcare, a company specializing in the medical billing of Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals and clinics. Paul works at the Tobyhanna Army Depot as an Electronics Mechanic Work Leader.

Alyssa started running in 1999 after she and a friend decided to challenge themselves and compete in the 2000 Steamtown Marathon. She remembers it as one of the most amazing accomplishments she has achieved to date.

Since then, she’s run and competed in many types of races such as full marathons, half marathons, and fun races like the Utica Boilermaker in Utica, New York, before putting running aside to start a family.

Alyssa will be representing Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates in the New York City marathon, something she considers a great honor after the help and support they’ve given her over the past 5 years.

Following the birth of her second child, Mason, in 2009, Alyssa developed back pain Her prognosis was bleak; Spinal Fusion Surgery and no running in her future. Thanks to years of core strengthening, physical therapy and dedication at Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates, Alyssa was able to strengthen her core and ultimately, give running another chance. In March 2013, a very happy Alyssa completed the Virginia Beach Half Marathon.

This will be my first marathon since 2005, but being part of Ryan’s Run has given me the motivation to take on the challenge once again. Like many others, I have seen unbelievable accomplishments and unexplainable recoveries with many family and friends who have fought and overcome battles to get healthy again. It truly is heartwarming that I can give back to such a great organization.

The New York City marathon will be Paul’s 8th marathon, but perhaps the most special yet. Having witnessed Alyssa’s struggle to get back to running and full health, he’s excited to share the experience of training for and running in the marathon that neither of them thought possible a few years ago.

Alyssa sacrifices and does so much for our family everyday, that words cannot express how it will feel to run alongside her when she completes her goal on November 2nd. We’re both honored to be running for Allied Services and supporting an organization that is known for their remarkable recoveries.
