Thank you for visiting my Samaritans Marathon Team fundraising page. I will have the honor of running the 2017 Boston Marathon on behalf of the Samaritans, a non-profit suicide prevention organization that has become very important to me.
As many of you may already know I will be running in the memory of my younger brother, Shawn, who our family lost to suicide in November of last year. One of the many things that we admired and loved about Shawn was his incredible talent as a distance runner. Shawn was always willing to share his talent by giving aspiring runners training tips and encouragement. Shawn also enjoyed comradery of being member of the Evanston, Il Running Club. A month before Shawn passed away, he ran the Grand Rapids Marathon which he achieved a personal record as well as a qualifying time for the 2017 Boston Marathon. We were so proud of him as we looked forward to cheering Shawn on in Boston, little did we know at the time this would not come to pass.
Shawn’s passing devastated our family and friends. I found the Samaritans when I was in need of grief support as I was trying to deal with the wide range of emotions surrounding my brothers loss. I have seen now how much the Samaritans services means to so many people affected by suicide. This inspired me to form our first team in Shawn’s memory at the Samaritans 5k this past October.
I decided to take up running as a way to honor my brother and in return, running has brought me renewed personal health as well as some healing. I have come to think of it as a final gift from Shawn. Running has now become a part of my life and I am thankful for it. I ran my first half marathon this past October with my brother, Matt. It was a fulfilling experience and I can now truly see why my brothers have enjoyed distance running for many years. Although this will be my first marathon, I look forward to leaving all that I have out there on the course come April 17th for Shawn, for the Samaritans and for anyone who has lost someone to suicide.
I could not think of a better way to honor Shawn’s memory and to help support the Samaritans than by fundraising for the important suicide prevention services they offer the community, while emulating something Shawn enjoyed so much.
Thank you for supporting the Samaritans by helping me reach and exceed my fundraising goal and to help me bring Shawn’s memory across the finish line at the 2017 Boston Marathon.
Thank you again for your support- Michael White
