The San Patrignano Community
San Patrignano is a community which welcomes young men and women with problems of drug addiction and social marginalization without discrimination based on ideology, social status or religion, completely free of charge. No money is asked for or accepted from those following the recovery program, their families or the State.
Since 1978 San Patrignano has been home to more than 25,000 people, offering them a home, legal and health care, the chance to study and learn a skill, therefore completely reintegrating them into society . There are currently roughly 1400 people living in the community, most of which are in the main location near Rimini, Italy. There are two smaller centers in Novafeltria (Marches region). There are roughly 109 volunteers working in San Patrignano, in addition to 313 full and part time employees, many of which are former addicts.
The community is also home to 75 children, sons and daughters of addicts being treated in the community as well as volunteers. Several family units, as well as thirty minors with serious problems of addiction and social marginalization live on the grounds as well. There is a medical facility with fifty beds on the grounds, specializing in diseases and pathologies associated with drug abuse. There is a kindergarten and after school center for children up to fourteen years of age, living quarters, school rooms, a library, sports facilities, a theater and auditorium, fifty three professional training workshops and a village of sixty small houses for volunteer families and those living in the community with children.
Through the years San Patrignano has welcomed many people with criminal charges pending, and has replaced over 4000 years of prison time with a therapeutic recovery program aimed at complete drug free rehabilitation and social reintegration. According to independent studies conducted by the Universities of Bologna, Pavia and Urbino by hair strand test on a randomly selected group of former residents, over 72 percent of those who complete the program remain drug free. About 50% of the daily operational costs of the community are covered by the sales of goods and services coming from San Patrignano’s professional training workshops, the rest by donations from private individuals and companies.
