Sonidos de la Tierra (Sounds of the Earth) has become one of the most powerful emblems of social change in Paraguay. Luis Szarán, internationally known composer, orchestra conductor and musical prodigy, created the program in 2002 under the idea that “the kid who plays Mozart by day doesn’t smash shop windows at night”(Luis Szarán, Oxford 2006).
Inspired by the concept of educating through art, during the last twelve years the program has allowed direct access to music education to more than 14,000 children and youth from scarce resources in 205 communities in Paraguay through the formation of music schools, choirs, orchestras, cultural associations or philharmonic societies, and instrumental workshops.
