In 2013 I visited Sri Lanka on business. One weekend I took a break and went to visit Kandy, a town located in central Sri Lanka. Before I went I asked one of the people I was doing business with about visiting an orphanage, and she gave me the address of the Wattagama Home. I enjoyed my visit so much that I went back a second time. Since then I have been helping out with small ($50) monthly contributions, to help improve the lives of the 35-45 girls who live there (the numbers change as some new girls come in and old ones get too old to remain).
I returned to Sri Lanka again in 2015, and again visited the orphanage. The girls gave me a very nice dancing show and I again had a good time playing tag (etc) on my visit.
While there I noticed the roof was leaking and growing mushrooms. We had an estimate done on fixing the roof, and the damage appeared to be extensive, fixing it will require replacing a large section of the roof.
These girls are very poor, and the budget for the orphanage is less than $2,000 a month--to care for 45 girls! That works out to less than $1.50 per girl per day to feed, clothe, care for and house them.
Without help they just won't be able to fix the roof before the rainy season this fall.
I have been working on raising the money needed to repair the roof, but there is a long way to go. I am hoping you can provide a few dollars toward this effort--and it would be very helpful if you could tell your friends about this and encourage them to help out too!
I will provide matching funds of up to $200 a month. I will also cover ALL expenses involved in collecting the money (including the fundraising costs) and transferring it to the orphanage, so 100% of the money you donate will be available to the orphanage. If people very generous and we raise more than the funds needed to fix the roof we will spend the money to provide them with computers & printers, more clothes, better food and perhaps a few fun things like a movie or perhaps a trip (eg to the botanical gardens, which are terrific in Kandy).
Note: the Fundraiser Location is Fairbanks Alaska because it wouldn't let me use Kandy, Sri Lanka where the orphanage is actually at.
Please check back monthly, as I will continue to add photos, videos and other information.
Thanks for your support!
