Team Jamaica Basketball, Inc. supports and conducts educational, cultural, and sporting activities in an effort to empower young people in Jamaica with the knowledge, social support, and life skills they need to become proactive contributors in their communities.
Involvement in team sports has proven to be a powerful tool for engaging disenfranchised youth in activities that are healthy alternative to violence and other anti-social behavior. In a developing country where social and economic challenges are pervasive, the increased interest of the Jamaican youth in the sport of basketball provides a unique opportunity for engagement and empowerment. Consequently, at-risk youth residing in the urban and rural areas of Jamaica, are the primary focus Team Jamaica Basketball, Inc.’s Youth Support Initiatives.
Although officially formalized three year ago, Team Jamaica Basketball (TJB) involvement in sports and education in Jamaica spans more than thirty years. Their work continues though partnerships with international and local organizations and institutions that share the same goal of providing educational opportunities for youngsters. The TJB Youth Support Initiatives include: (1) Need-based Grants – funding the cost of uniforms, books, and tuition etc; (2) Scholarship Initiative - providing students/athletes with scholarship opportunities to study locally and overseas. (3) Youth skills development and support programs - organizing basketball and life skills developmental programs and camps to enable youngsters to overcome the challenges the face daily.
