Four Days Past our Inaugural Walk!
October 19, 2017
BENEFITING: Cure JM Foundation
EVENT DATE: Oct 15, 2017
In February 2017, our son Geno Corey, was diagnosed at Boston Children's Hospital with a rare autoimmune disease called Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM). This disease affects only 2-4 kids out of 1-million children in the US per year, and causes skin rash (dermato) and muscle inflammation (myositis), resulting in weak muscles. At one point, Geno could not walk and had to use a wheelchair in the hospital. He has had to regain his leg and arm muscle strength through Physical Therapy. And he has to stay out of the sun, as to not cause another flare of his skin rash.
Unfortunately, there is still no cure for JDM; but the Cure JM Foundation (CureJM.org) is working diligently with researchers, doctors and hospitals all over the world to help find a cure! This small non-profit organization donates over 87% of all it's profits to fund research at places like: the National Institute of Health, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, George Washington University Myositis Center and many other medical centers.
The Cure JM Foundation was established in October 2003 by Shari Hume, Tom Hume and Lisa Felix, all parents of children with JM, and by Harriet Bollar, a grandmother of a child with JM. They were brought together only by circumstance, but with the same determination to find a cure for Juvenile Myositis. Their ultimate goal was to eradicate JM, so that no child would ever have to suffer from this insidious disease again. Their fundraising efforts began with a Lemonade Stand in Encinitas, CA!
Without the fundraising efforts of the Cure JM Foundation, very sick children like Geno would not have as much chance of remission as they do now. In fact, not long ago there was over a 30% mortality rate for JM children. Now, because of corticosteroids like Prednisone, most children survive - but with terrible side-effects like bone loss and breakage, swelling, and many other future problems. That's why it's essential that we, as parents, family, friends and concerned individuals, help find better and safer treatments for these beautiful kids! This is why we are fundraising for the Cure JM Foundation!
