THE STORY:

On November 1, 2015 I'll be running my very first New York City Marathon to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of my wife’s grandmother, YiaYia, Victoria Vastardis. Over the past several years, the family had to endure watching her slowly lose her faculties and not being able to do all the things she once loved.  Sadly, she lost her battle with this disease on October 14th, 2015.

Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. Over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050.

Additionally, it is one of the costliest chronic diseases. In 2015, the costs of caring for those with Alzheimer's in America will total an estimated $226 billion, only half of which will be covered by Medicare. Unless something is done, in 2050, Alzheimer's is projected to cost over $1.1 trillion (in 2015 dollars).

Please help me reach my goal of raising $3,500 in support of the Alzheimer’s Association which not only supports the advancement of research but also provides critical services such as early stage programs, support groups, and care consultation.

I would run 500 miles if it meant finding a cure for the millions of people and their families who suffer from this disease. 26.2 is a start.

If you are interested in helping me achieve my goal and support this great cause you can do so by making a tax-deductible donation by clicking on the orange "DONATE" button on the right.

You can also mail your donation via check. Checks can be written out to Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter, and be sure to note “Bram Spiessens – NYC Marathon" in the memo line. This allows them to deposit it faster by letting them know who should be credited to. Mail to the below address:
