EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
Dear family and friends,
On November 1, 2015, I’ll be running the New York City Marathon to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of my mom, who was officially diagnosed with the disease in 2011 though she’s experienced symptoms as early as 2008. Sadly, the early symptoms my mom experienced were eerily familiar to us. Her mother - my grandmother - passed away with Alzheimer’s disease in 1989.
Over the past several years, my family has had to endure watching her slowly lose her faculties – from not recognizing loved ones to losing her eyesight, she is now unable to do so many of the things she enjoyed doing. She loved to travel with my dad and has visited every continent in the world – including a safari in Africa and penguin watching in Antarctica. She is no longer able to be left alone and needs assistance with basic tasks that most of us take for granted. I’m running this marathon to celebrate all that she has done for me, and to help support and hopefully find a cure for this disease that has devastated so many families.
Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. Over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. The Alzheimer’s Association provides services such as the early stage programs, support groups, education and training, care consultation, 24-hour helpline, in addition to research to find a cure.
I hope that you will join me in celebrating my mom, and advancing research that will someday discover a cure for Alzheimer’s. My goal is to raise as much as possible with your help. If you are interested in helping me achieve my goal and support this great cause you can do so by making a tax-deductible donation by clicking on the orange "DONATE" button on the right.
You can also mail your donation via check. Checks can be written out to Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter, and be sure to note "Karen Rulapaugh – NYC Marathon" in the memo line. This allows them to deposit it faster by letting them know who should be credited to. Mail to the below address:
