About Apne Aap:
Founded by 22 women in prostitution, and journalist Ruchira Gupta, Apne Aap Women Worldwide ends sex trafficking in India by helping victims and survivors access justice, education, housing and livelihoods, send their daughters to school, and organize to campaign for laws that punish pimps and johns.
My name is Georgy, I'm a recent post graduate who's biking across the USA to raise funds for Apne Aap’s Sonagachi Education Project. My goal is to raise $30,000 to support a year’s worth of education and living costs for 47 children (aged 6-13 years) who have been taken out of the Sonagachi (the largest red light district in Kolkata) and the Munsiganj (in Bangladesh) and have been enrolled in the Rama Krishna Mission School.

Growing up in the Sonagachi:
For most children, being born in the red light district means having no future. Denied access to basic healthcare and mainstream education, they grow up in an environment where they witness their mothers being beaten and humiliated by clients, pimps, and brothel owners. As many of their mothers work where they live, the children are often forced out of their own homes to roam the streets and fend for themselves. On the streets, the boys are introduced to alcohol and substance abuse at an early age, and they often become involved directly or indirectly in the sex-trafficking industry. The girls are in constant danger of being abused from the minute they hit puberty. While their parents may attempt to send them away by placing them in arranged marriages, most young women find themseleves unable to escape the red light district.
The Rama Krishna Mission School
In a world where illiteracy keeps women captive, knowledge is a powerful tool. The Rama Krishna Mission School provides children from the Sonagachi with a safe, clean, living space where they can focus on gaining the education neccessary to break the cycle of poverty and sex trafficking.
