BENEFITING: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
Dear family, friends and colleagues –
Thank you for visiting my page. While I have reached my fundraising goal, I am never done raising funds for breast cancer. Please consider giving...and reading along. The short story is this: son Joey and I are running the New York City Marathon in November. The long story is this: we want YOU to be a part of it. Thanks, in advance, for reading along...
I’ve been a runner for over 30 years and along the way, have compiled way too many running epiphanies, running quips, running quotes and running memories. What I know to be true is as much as I LOVE a 5 mile run around Boring, OR, it’s the runs that have “some legs” to them that make them all the more meaningful. In November in The Big Apple, we’ll be running for all the families, friends and colleagues that have been affected by breast cancer...or any kind of cancer for that matter. Joey and I are a part of team Breast Cancer Research Foundation and are honored and thrilled to have been accepted on their team to raise funds for the organization. We hope you’ll help us.
We all know what the pink ribbons mean. You see them on yogurt containers, cereal boxes, hats and t-shirts. While the BCRF has a public awareness element, its focus is on research to end the deadly disease. Founded in NYC, we can’t think of a better organization in which to run, an organization that last year, funded over $45 million to more than 200 scientists from top universities and academic medical centers across the globe. BCRF is the only breast cancer organization rated an "A"+ by CharityWatch.
And, we can’t think of better people to honor when we run than Lori and Lisa, both sister-in-laws that passed away in recent years. Many of you were blessed enough to know them, some of you have heard their stories through me, maybe some of you have not even heard that...but you can know them now. Lori was 49 when she passed away in 2004, having lived nearly 10 years with breast cancer, metastatic to her liver. We ran many races together, Lori and I, Hood to Coasts, Cascade Run Offs, Starlight Runs...Boston’s 100th marathon was our crowning moment. Lisa was 53 when she passed away in 2010, having lived 13 years with breast cancer, metastatic to bone. Lisa was not a runner (and proud of it!), but oooohhhh, did-she-run circles around us all in how she lived, lived, lived. And so, for Lori, for Lisa, and for countless others I’ve known or know...Elaine, Lois, Carolyn, Jane, Mary, Cheryl, Jennifer, Lori, Shirley, Linda, Susan...and so many others that you know...we’ll run 26.2 miles for them. I’ve included several pics here of Lori and Lisa, our honorary heavenly captains, and a few other running highlights.
I ask you to join my “team,” our team, too. Any tax-deductible donation helps and goes straight to the BCRF of which, .91 cents of every dollar goes straight to research. Can you do $5.00? $10.00? More? Click on the bid orange DONATE button to send a donation...scroll to the bottom and leave a Donor Comment too if you'd like. I’m excited to see you all jump on board, donate, leave a comment if you can, and be a part of this trek in New York with Joey and I. You will be with us in spirit or heck, come to the finish line in Central Park if you can...Scott and Margaret are already staking out their spots!
And finally, a BIG thank you to sister Christy for helping with airline travel and friend Morgan for helping with accommodations at the Hyatt. Simply unbelievable! From Boring to the Big Apple...we’ll do the running, you do the cheering. Come along with us!

THE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION® (BCRF) IS RUNNING THE 2014 TCS NYC MARATHON TO RAISE CRITICAL FUNDS FOR LIFESAVING MEDICAL RESEARCH.
Our BCRF marathon team is diverse—we are survivors, family members, employees, supporters, allies, professionals, runners, non-runners, and even researchers. But what we have in common is one thing: the desire and dedication to do our part to help bring about a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. For over 20 years, BCRF-funded researchers have been at the forefront of nearly every significant breakthrough in understanding, preventing and treating the disease. We know that the answers continue to lie in science, and that the only thing standing in the way is research funding. With your help, together we can accelerate progress and achieve a world without breast cancer.
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE:
