Hello Friends and Family -
I hope you will support my Boston Marathon run to raise money for Bottom Line.
Bottom Line was founded in 1997 to help low-income and first-generation students get in to college, graduate from college, and go far in life. Since then, Bottom Line has provided one-on-one guidance and mentoring to thousands of high school and college students. This year, Bottom Line will be providing personalized support to over 2,000 students across Massachusetts and New York.
To date, 98% of Bottom Line’s high school seniors have been accepted to college and 74% of our college students have graduated in six years or less, nearly three times the graduation rate of similarly disadvantaged students. Our unique program is already working with 1 in 4 college-bound students in Boston and 1 in 10 college-bound students in Worcester. This year (2012-2013) we are launching an initiative to serve every eligible student in Boston’s poorest and most disadvantaged communities: Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan. We believe that helping enough students from each community realize the dream of a college diploma can transform the educational attainment, health and prosperity of these communities. There was recently an article in the Globe highlighting the increased college graduation rate of Boston high school graduates. I believe that Bottom Line played a large part in this increase. In just a few years, half of all graduates from Boston high schools will have a Bottom Line mentor.
I got involved with Bottom Line more deeply when I heard a young man speak at a Bottom Line dinner. He talked about growing up without his mother, having to help his father package cocaine at age 6 and then watching his dad go off to prison. Luckily, while he hadn't been a stellar student through 11th grade, he hung out with a good group of kids who introduced him to Bottom Line. With Bottom Line's support, he had graduated from college and was in a management training program for an investment company. There wasn't a dry eye in the house when he was done speaking. And his is just one of countless stories of Bottom Line's success and impact on young lives.
I think you know that I left the insurance business to go back to law school to advocate for young people who deserve a chance. Currently I represent court-involved indigent youth in special education and school discipline matters. Every day, I see first-hand the challenges that these young people and their families face. They struggle to get through school and the dream of college is just that, a dream. I had one client recently tell me, "College is not for a kid like me." Bottom Line is changing that.
And you can help continue the great work of Bottom Line by making a donation of any size to support my run. Your support helps me log the miles.
With my sincere, heartfelt thanks,
Michele Van Leer Scavongelli, F.S.A. & Esq.!
