On November 8th I am running the Golden Gate Half with Team Every Mothers Counts. Since I founded Every Mother Counts in 2010 I have put in hundreds, if not thousands, of miles to raise awareness and funds to improve maternal health to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for more mothers. When I started training for my first NYC marathon back in 2011, I had no idea that I would still be running today. Since then I have finished four full marathons and six half marathons and consider myself a distance runner. Last spring I ran my fastest marathon yet in London and qualified for the Boston Marathon in 2016. Between now and April I will be running half marathons in San Francisco, Haiti and New York City all to increase awareness about one of the biggest barriers for women in need of critical maternity care- distance.
The Golden Gate Half is my first race in the state where I was born and raised and I am really excited to be running it along with my sisters. We all feel incredibly lucky to have had access to the care we needed when we delivered each of our children. Had I not had the care I received the day I was born a mom, I would not have the opportunity to experience the wonder and joy of raising my own two children today. A woman dies every two minutes bringing life into the world and you have the power to change that. 98 percent of global maternal deaths are preventable. With access to education, transportation and supplies we can greatly reduce the number of preventable deaths that occur during and after delivery.
With your support, more women will have the opportunity to enter motherhood safely and when that is possible, more families can thrive.
There are many ways to show your support on race day. If you are in the area, you can come out to cheer me and Team EMC on. You can also purchase an EMC t-shirt or sweatshirt from our running apparel partners at Oiselle.com where 40% of each EMC item will go toward funding our grant portfolio.
