On Friday, March 11, 2011, at 14:27JST, a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the eastern coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu. 15,815 people were killed and nearly 4,000 are still missing.
The magnitude 9.0 offshore quake, at a depth of 24 kilometers, unleashed waves estimated at more than 38 meters high and was followed by huge aftershocks for hours. Dozens of cities and villages along the Pacific East coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter. Tokyo was hit by thousands of magnitude 5.0 aftershocks, causing widespread disruption to transport and other infrastructure.
The earthquake triggered the tsunami which led to the crisis of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. 700,000 people were displaced from their homes, and 400,000 are still homeless due to buildings being destroyed or forced evacuation.
It has been almost over a year since the catastrophic event happened. In many ways, Japan is still reeling from this devastating earthquake and tsunami. The future remains uncertain for thousands of survivors, particularly those displaced by contamination from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
With this in mind, a group of individuals have decided to join forces to climb Mount Fuji in order to raise money for the victims of Fukushima and the many others who were affected by this tragedy.

Many thanks to Geoff Leeming for allowing us to use his photo of Mount Fuji.
