On Marathon Day the Boston Athletic Association looks out for the safety of runners; the other 364 days a year it’s up to WalkBoston. WalkBoston is a non-profit dedicated to the pedestrian life of one of the most walkable cities around, since walking strengthens transportation, health and community itself. I got involved with WalkBoston by chance a few years back. Lucky me. When I realized that they'd helped to organize a "Safe Routes to School" program for kids in my one-time "hometown" of Arlington, MA (Spy Ponders!), I was sold.
As someone who trains in part by jogging 10 miles to or from the school where I teach, WalkBoston is right up my alley, at the crossroads of exercise, reducing emissions and just plain running into neighbors and friends on our way somewhere and sharing a conversation in person instead of via cell phone.
Please look for my training mileage and marathon time challenges coming soon.
