The Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is an official charity partner of the Wipro San Francisco Marathon. Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1% of all adult cancers), but rather prevalent in children (about 15% of all childhood cancers).
I am a sarcoma survivor and will be running the San Francisco Marathon three months after the completion of radiation, the final stage of my sarcoma treatment. SFA is partnering with this event to raise awareness and funds to support sarcoma research. In May 2012 at 27 years old, I was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma. Synovial sarcoma is found in only 800 people annually. Already a runner, I was registered for the 2012 San Francisco Marathon but instead of spending the summer training, I was receiving chemotherapy treatment and undergoing surgery to remove the tumor which was wrapped around my femural artery. Preparing for the 2012 SF marathon led me to discovering the tumor and eventual diagnosis - the tumor was found as result of a visit to the ortheopedic surgeon for continual pain in my left groin.
Twenty years ago I would have lost my left leg to synovial sarcoma. Thanks to the evolution of sarcoma research and supporters like yourself, I am a sarcoma survivor and future marathon runner. The cure for sarcoma, however, will only come with more funds supporting increased research around the country – and raising the funds to directly support SFA’s vital research is what running this race is all about. It is also about honoring all of those who have lost their battle with sarcoma and celebrating the courage of those currently fighting.
My best friend and boyfriend will be running as well to support me on Race Day. Please support or join our team to help raise funds for sarcoma research. To donate, select the team below. To join the fundraising efforts and run on race day, select “Join the Team” to set up your own team page.
